Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E520 Review

Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E520Writing reviews for the latest gadgets has always been a hobby of mine. I’ve been using laptops for quite some time and it always blows my mind to see which bells and whistles the developers of these gadgets will come up with. For me I always want a laptop/notebook that is practical and is going to have the capability to handle my wants and needs.

It always seems to be like a little bit of a competition, at least for me to show off my new laptop to my friends and family members. Oddly, I am the first person that usually comes to mind when you have a new device and want to know if it is any good or not. Well, I will go into full details about the new Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E520 in this comprehensive review of another great product by Lenovo.

Characteristics Needed For A Laptop

There are a number of key things you need to keep in mind when purchasing a new laptop. These are:

Portability

Performance

Features

Software

If you buy a laptop there are some guidelines that the best notebooks will follow. True, they may look similar from the outside but in the inside of these complex devices you will soon learn they are very different. Please pay close attention because I am going to point out some vital specifications that the Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E520 simply excels at.

Portability Matters?

Obviously, if you are considering a laptop you want to be able to travel with it. The average laptop is about 6 lbs (2.72 Kg). The Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E520 weighs 5.51 lbs which is below the average by a whole pound. Not to mention you want a laptop that is thin enough where it isn’t like carrying around a rock. However, you don’t want it so thin that it feels like its going to break easily. Lenovo actually listened to their customers feedbacks from previous generations and made it 13% thinner. It’s between 1.15″-1.33″ in width. It’s just perfect and using the keyboard and trackpad actually feels quite natural.

Performance

A laptop has to do what you intend it to do or it’s utterly useless. The Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E520 has an Intel Core i5-2430M 2.4GHz (3 MB L3 Cache) CPU. This is a 2nd generation processor while other competing models are still using the first generations CPU. When loading up this laptop you’ll be impressed by how quickly it boots because it’s integrated with Lenovo Enhanced Experience 2.0 which enhances its load time by 200%. This laptop comes with a 500 GB hard drive which is 7,200 rpm, which is a heck of a lot faster than a 5,400 rpm hard drive.

For graphics it has a Intel HD Graphics 3000 which uses shared memory to help save your computers resources. However, it comes with 4 GB (DDR3) of RAM which bundled with the “shared memory” from the graphics card makes it feel like it has 150% more memory.

Features

The Internet experience with the Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E520 is simply amazing. Of course, it comes with a wireless card (Gigabit LAN and WLAN). The Webcam is impressive which is integrated with a HD 720p low light sensitive webcam. Talking to your friends/family halfway around the world is great because the sound quality is enhanced by something called “conference room mode”. This will simply pick up sounds that you want while you have the option to disable the keyboard sounds.

For docking this laptop is a gem. I use the “Video docking port replicator” which makes it easy for me plugin another monitor, USB, or LAN. For charging my iPhone, MP3, or any other handheld device I use the AC/DC adapter which performs as a duel peripheral device.

Extra Software

The ThinkPad Edge E520 is not only a great laptop but comes with a plethora of bundled software. Rescue and recovery which is good for safeguarding your data aside from backing it up on an external hard drive. FingerPrint software which can actually restrict unauthorized access to your system, as well. Norton Internet Security to help protect the security of your system. Microsoft Office 2010 which has all the text editors, spreadsheets, powerpoint, etc. Corel Burn which makes burning your DVD/CD’s as simple as dragging and dropping and pushing burn.

Buy At Amazon

Where To Buy?

I would expect to pay over $1,000 from Best Buy or Sears, but I managed to find it online at Amazon for far lower. My jaw almost hit the floor when I saw this exact laptop on sale for $708.04, and best of all, that includes free shipping and handling. It is backed with a 30 day money back guarantee which makes this ThinkPad Edge E520 a bargain!

Included At Amazon

Laptop

6-cell Lithium ion battery

A/C Adapter

Bundled Software

Complaints/Issues?

The only complaints I could find on this laptop was the sound quality is a little below average. Not a big deal for a lot of users seeing how they generally tend to carry headphones with them which easily solves this issue. It works for me.
